The phrase “batting a thousand” refers to achieving a perfect batting average in baseball. It can be used either to praise exceptional success or, ironically, to highlight repeated failure. In Saul’s case, both meanings apply. In 1 Samuel 11, he appears to be batting a thousand, leading Israel with courage and decisive faith. Yet as his story unfolds, the phrase becomes tragically ironic. Saul consistently misses God’s heart, resists His word, and unravels under the weight of his own disobedience. Even so, God graciously works through Saul’s failures to establish His people and even though they deserve judgment God seeks to establish them in His grace, a grace that ultimately points to Jesus, Israel’s true and perfect King.
